Parts of German bomber shot down over Whitby sell for £950 at London auction

Several items connected to a German bomber that was shot down over Whitby in February 1940 have sold for £950 at auction.

The parts were sold by Dawsons Auctioneers in London earlier this week.

Items up for grabs in the lot included a propeller blade, wireless aerial post, fuselage fragment and the wireless aerial from the aircraft.

The Heinkel had been on an anti-shipping sortie and was downed by Flight Lieutenant Peter Townsend in a Hurricane of No43 Squadron.

Ft Lt Townsend was later romantically involved with Princess Margaret.

Peter Mason, auctioneer and valuer at Dawsons, said: “We were excited to auction several parts of a Heinkel HE-111 bomber that was shot down over Whitby.”
