Newby and Scalby Community Library to host two book launches

Newby and Scalby Community Library is to host two book launches over the next three months to raise money for library funds.

The spring bulbs are beginning to poke through in the library’s community garden which was created with the aid of a £18,900 grant from the People's Projects Lottery Fund.

Visitors are invited to enjoy its tranquility and take part in some of the events shared on the library website, Facebook and Twitter pages. They include 2 special book launches:

On Thursday April 23 at 6.30pm, local Newby author Bishop David Wilbourne will speak about his newly-published authorised biography of Archbishop John Habgood, Archbishop of York 1983-95, entitled, 'Just John'. David was Bishop of Llandaff, Vicar of Helmsley and Chaplain to the Archbishops John Habgood and David Hope.

He was schooled in Scarborough. He has written two 'James Herriott with a dog collar' type novels as well as 'The Helmsley Chronicles' and 'Shepherd of Another Flock', about his ministry in Ryedale.

He is a frequent after- dinner speaker, TV and radio broadcaster, retreat and conference leader.

Tickets to hear his humorous 20-minute talk followed by questions cost just £5 from the library and include a glass of wine and £1 off any purchase of 'Just John'.

Then, on Thursday May 7, at 7pm travel writer and children's author Horatio Clare will appear at the library as part of Read Regional 2020: highlighting new writing in the North. Tickets to hear him speak at Scarborough's Books by the Beach on 25 April sold out on the day they were released, so this is another opportunity for people to hear him speak about his adventures described in 'Down to the Sea in Ships', 'The Light in the Dark' and 'Icebreaker'.

Horatio writes on travel for the Financial Times, on books for The Spectator and on many subjects for From our own Correspondent on Radio 4. Tickets to hear him are £5 from the library and include a glass of wine.

This story previously reported that local author David Lewis would give an illustrated talk on some of the pitfalls and processes involved in caring for someone with dementia, that he writes about in his book, 'Great Aunts and Armadillos' on Saturday March 28 at 3pm. This event has now been postponed until October.
