Mystery of vanished Scarborough chapel heads

The stone heads which used to adorn one of the windows of Dean Road Chapel have vanished.

According to Coast and Vale Community Action (CaVCA), their removal looks like a "deliberate act" rather than vandalism.

"Perhaps whoever took the effort to climb a ladder and chisel them off is planning to restore and return them?" posted the organisation on social media.

"Or perhaps they fancied them as decorations for their own garden or home, or planned to sell them on to someone?

"If that's the case they must be unaware of the special place that the chapel and cemeteries hold in the hearts of local people and of the efforts of the local community in recent years to maintain the cemeteries and seek funding to restore the chapel to its former glory.

"Removing the heads like this really doesn't help."

CaVCA is urging anyone who knows anything about the missing heads to get in touch by sending a message to 07799 646300.

It added: "It's never too late to do the right thing."

Dean Road Chapel is a registered charity created in 2013 to pursue the vision of a fully restored chapel at the heart of Scarborough’s Dean Road and Manor Road Cemetery.

Project leaders are aiming to provide a focal point for cemetery visitors which instills local pride in a much-loved heritage resource, brings the community together and contributes towards Scarborough’s appeal as a tourist destination.
