Festival founder Mike Gordon recognised for services to Scarborough and its jazz scene

The event was held at Scarborough Spa – the venue which hosts the annual jazz festival established by Mr Gordon 21 years ago.

During that time, he has brought some of the biggest names in international jazz to the town.

Mr Gordon, who is married to Marian who helped with the festival, retired, aged 86, as its director last year. He passed the reins to his son, teacher and jazz pianist Mark.

"I am overwhelmed and honoured,” said Mr Gordon who was also one of the founders of Scarborough Jazz Club 40 years ago and served as its chairman. It meets each Wednesday at the Cask in Ramshill.

“When I think about it, I have contributed a lot to bringing jazz to Scarborough,” he said.

As part of the celebrations, son Mark led a five-piece band that included bassist Bob Walker, drummer Rowan Oliver and vocalist Richard Adams.

Award-winning saxophonist Alan Barnes completed the lineup. Mr Barnes has been associated with the festival since it started and as well as being part of the programme, is its resident host. He travelled from Bedfordshire to be at Mr Gordon’s celebrations.

Mark, who is the resident keyboardist at the jazz club, said: “My dad is an inspiration to me and so many musicians in the town. He has done so much for jazz and me personally.

“I have made a career out of teaching and playing music. That would never have happened if I had not grown up in a house full of music and jazz.

“This event recognises everything dad has done for Scarborough and jazz – and is a personal note from me.”

Mr Gordon was presented with a plaque which will be put up in the Spa.

Scarborough mayor Coun John Ritchie was at the unveiling. He said: “Mike’s contribution to the town and jazz is stunning. The festival brings in people not just from all over the country but from all over the world.”

This year’s festival runs at the Spa from September 27 to 29.
