Part of former youth hostel to be converted

A COTTAGE which was part of the former youth hostel could be converted to form residential accommodation.

Abbey Cottage, is a two storey building forming part of a terrace which also incorporates Caedmon House and Coach House, on Abbey Plain.

Part of the old youth hostel was attached to the cottage following a conversion in the 1980s and prior to this the cottage had been derelict after being shelled by an attacking German vessel during the second world war.

The youth hostel, owned by the Strickland Estate, has been unused since around 2003 when it relocated to Abbey House.

Jill Dalladay has applied to Scarborough Borough Council for permission to convert the most southern room of the former youth hostel which were offices to form a sitting room accessible from the lounge of the adjoining two storey dwelling known as Abbey Cottage.

There is foot and vehicular access to the cottage to the east of Whitby Abbey but this is restricted to the owners of the three dwellings in the terrace.
