BANKS in Whitby once had a licence to print money - and now residents of the Whitby area are invited to own a piece of history.
A selection of bank notes printed in Whitby during the 19th Century are being sold by auctioneers London Coins.
During the start of the Industrial Revolution, provincial banks could print money in order to fuel the developing economies of the surrounding areas.
A number of local mints grew up around the country, including the Whitby Old Bank.
The notes are estimated to fetch between £100 and £600, far more than their original worth.
The sale will take place on Saturday 5 March.
