Letter: We need an authority that loves Whitby like we do
Just down the coast in Bridlington two organisations are working closely together to maintain and develop a first-class commercial and leisure harbour.
The local authority, which is the East Riding of Yorkshire, together with the Bridlington Harbour Commissioners, is demonstrating their commitment to regenerate the town, and to expand its tourism offer.
To that end an order has been placed for a new £1.2m dredger, new piers are being planned, the facilities for the fishing fleet are being improved, and the smart Tourist Information Centre has moved into superb new premises.
But here in Whitby there is no effective Harbour Board, the dredger is knackered and has been inoperative since last May, the harbour is rapidly silting up and becoming dangerous, the piers are eroding and disintegrating, and the ideally located and purpose built Tourist Information Centre has been closed and is to be leased by Scarborough Borough Council to a restaurant, and the Tourist Information Centre has been moved into a little office hidden behind a wall.
When will Scarborough Borough Council get its act together, stop ruining our town, and invest properly in our facilities?
Failing that, can we please break free from the borough council and have a local authority which loves Whitby as much as we do.
