Letter: Free should mean free

If like me you are old and living on benefits you are probably being pestered by people offering you a replacement boiler free.

Reader Joy Peach was disappointed to find that her 'free' boiler was going to cost 450 to install.

Four times I have answered all their questions and been told I qualify on all counts - great! “You do mean free,” I insist, “no nasty hidden extras?”, “No, no - this is a government scheme to help the poor and the aged keep warm this winter and it is absolutely free.” Stupidly I believed them.

I have just had another phone call giving me a date and time for the installation of the energy efficient boiler for a mere £450! What! So much for free! Is this what Theresa May intended?

I’m afraid I swore heartily and slammed the phone down.

Lulling us into believing them thus far, it is clearly a monstrous scam intended to trick us - the old and the cold and the vulnerable - into agreeing to accept this much publicised offer - a free boiler. Can’t somebody stop them?
