Letter: In the dark over Grope Lane origins
Re: the call by the Captain Cook Memorial Museum on Grape Lane memories:
The Whitby Gazette printed a sanitised explanation for the origin of ‘Grope Lane’ - so dark that people had to feel their way along the sides.
As I understand it, Whitby wasn’t the only port to have a Grope Lane - an unlit place where men who had been away at sea for weeks could meet the ladies of the local ‘service industry’ in a Donald Trump sense.
