Letter: Council must be challenged over Whitby
Following letters from Heather Relf and Cllr Robert Barnett, I am appealing to everyone who loves Whitby to contact all our local councillors asking them to put pressure on the decision makers at Scarborough Borough Council.
I suggest they highlight the following:
1. The lack of progress with repair and maintenance of the harbour walls and piers;
2. The ridiculous delay in getting the dredger replaced or repaired (not working since May);
3. The lack of information on where the fee from filming the Grand Tour on Endeavour Wharf has been allocated;
All the above relate to the issue of ring-fencing revenue received by the borough council from Whitby Harbour undertakings, including car parking.
The first issue is so important as it appears that the borough council is not in a position to confirm “who is responsible for maintaining the quayside”.
This was quoted on the recent TV local news report.
Scarborough Borough Council has been responsible for Whitby’s harbour since 1974 under the terms of the 1905 Whitby Harbour Act.
It is essential that all Whitby residents keep up the pressure.
We should call for a public meeting with councillors and officers of the borough council to explain their shameful lack of care and action in Whitby which is the jewel in the crown of the borough.
