New training centre recruits the future of area's fishing industry

The Whitby Fishing Industry Training Centre is helping to secure the future of the fishing industry.

The centre’s business development manager Andrew Hodgson, said: “Apprenticeships are extremely important to us and the maritime industry, the new recruits form the backbone to the future of the fishing industry.

“Here at Whitby Fishing School, we promote an environment that encourages all our students to develop a firm ‘can do’ attitude.

“We encourage growth of all our apprentices through academic and practical hands on learning.

“We are a company experiencing change and growth which will ensure our position as a leading Approved Training Provider in both the Sea Fishing and Offshore renewables sectors.”

All new trainees begin with a formal induction, before commencing their respective mandatory Sea Fish Industry Authority’s basic safety courses to include; First Aid, Sea Survival, Fire Fighting and Health and Safety for New Entrants.

Anne Hornigold, chief executive at Whitby Fishing School, said: “I join the rest of the company in welcoming our new trainees to the Maritime Diploma in Sea Fishing and I feel proud that local lads are on this intake.

“Whitby Fishing School are dedicated and committed to developing the next generation of seafarers.”

Whitby Fishing School has trained more than 100 young people in the last two years and was praised at Sea Work International for its focus on safety and training delivery within the maritime industry.

Lewis Sykes, from Scarborough, who joined the apprenticeship programme during July this year as a deck hand apprentice, said: “I’m really pleased to be learning here at Whitby Fishing School and I now look forward to the next step in my seagoing career.”

Whitby Fishing School is regarded as a Maritime Training Centre of Excellence. The company’s training centre in Whitby is an approved training provider for the Maritime Coastguard Agency, Royal Yachting Association and Sea Fish Industry Authority.
