Museum’s plea for family photographs

WHITBY museum is looking for family photographs of christenings, weddings and funeral or mourning scenes from before the 1940’s.

The current display in the costume gallery reflects christening robes, maternity wear, wedding and mourning dresses from the late Victorian, Edwardian and 1920’s era.

Staff at the museum hope to display photographs of local people, families or anyone with local connections, in the gallery to enhance the exhibition, throughout the summer.

The photographic collection currently on display contains this wonderful image of a family in mourning and the two Edwardian wedding photographs including one for a Mary Botham from the collection are very evocative of the era.

Anyone who has a photograph of a christening, wedding or mourning occasion from before the Second World War, are invited to bring them along to the museum on Saturday 26 March between 1.30pm and 4.30pm to meet the curators.
