The rider from Thornaby in Stockton underwent surgery at James Cook Hospital yesterday after being airlifted from the scene near Ugthorpe.

He is recovering and is expected to be out of hospital in around a week's time.

The collision occurred as the motorcycle was heading from Whitby towards Ugthorpe and a Citroen van was turning right at the junction for Ugthorpe caravan park.

The driver of the white Citroen Berlingo van, a 33-year-old man from Hull, was uninjured. The motorcycle collided with the rear of the van.

Local diversions were put in place while the emergency services worked at the scene.

Witnesses are asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2, and ask for Garry Chapman.
