Mandarin Chinese was introduced at Seton Primary School in Staithes when Mrs Xin Barnham began working as a teaching assistant in classes two and four.
All the children have been inspired by Xin’s enthusiasm and many of them even do Chinese writing at home in their own time, bringing in booklets they have made and posters and their own dictionaries.
One pupil even composed a letter using the internet to provide words and symbols he did not know and delivered it to Xin’s house.
Headteacher Ros Barningham said: “Xin has a wonderful rapport with the pupils and we thought the introduction of Mandarin Chinese could possibly equip some of them well for the future. Even the staff are learning the language.”
Staithes could just have some of the happiest and youngest Chinese learners in Yorkshire.
