A NEW-BORN lamb was rescued from certain death by a passing pooch after falling down a rabbit hole.
Alex Miller, from Kettleness, said that she had taken her two-year-old labrador Alfie for a walk when the heroic hound came across the trapped newborn.
Mrs Miller said: “It was the first day I had let him off the lead when he disappeared up the embankment of the railway line at Kettleness.
“I thought he was after rabbits as he would not come back to me.”
Alfie, a former gundog, had been adopted by Mrs Miller just six weeks ago and the celebrated canine led her straight to the trapped lamb.
Alex was able to pull the lamb out of the hole and returned it to local famer Dave Lewis.
Mrs Miller added: “He told me that it had only been born about one hour before.
“The ewe had triplets but only wanted two so she rejected the lamb, and it wandered out of the field and fell down the hole.”
Thanks to Alfie, the lamb is now fit and healthy and has been adopted by another ewe.
