I sympathise with the attraction of “things being run and decided locally” but sadly feel it is unlikely to happen.
The old Whitby Urban District Council gave way to bigger forms of local government.
Many younger people might think that was the council’s choice but Whitby Urban, Whitby Rural, Loftus Urban and a multitude of local councils across the country were forced by the then government to become parts of new large councils.
The previous district councillors were unpaid, knew their areas very well, decided what should be done and the staff did the work.
A sensible system which Westminster demolished and made life much more expensive for the ratepayers and for the public.
