Lealholm Show ‘exceptional’ despite weather

Crowds at Lealholm Show braved persistent rain to enjoy a wonderful array of exhibits, produce and sport.

The day started cool but dry, a steady stream of entries started to arrive from 8am checking in at the new site of the secretary’s tent which had been moved to the showfield.

Throughout the morning, the competitors dodged the heavy showers running between the tents to stage their entries.

Despite the rain, everyone was still upbeat with Diane checking the weather forecast regularly. Trade stands started to arrive from mid-morning and all entries were staged by 11am.

The show opened with the traditional fancy dress competition, with a great turnout of costumes.

After a pitch inspection it was decided the sports would go ahead. This event is one of the main highlights of the show with children aged from two to 16 years taking part in a whole range of races and the wellie wanging, all cheered on by the spectators.

The large marquee was filled with a fantastic array of flowers, vegetables, baking, wine and handicrafts.

The quality of produce was exceptional considering the weather.

In the children’s tent visitors were treated to a super display of vegetable animals, cakes, artwork, poetry, hand writing and a great collection of photographs bringing smiles to lots of faces.

The day was rounded off with the duck race with about 800 bright yellow ducks being launched into the River Esk. The committee thank all those who gave their time and support, from the stewards and judges to the Young Farmers.
