Whitby will have a representative in the Miss England finals for the first time after Laura Stone scooped the Scarborough and District crown.
Laura (23) secured both the popular vote and the judge’s choice in the event and will now go on to represent Whitby in the national competition next month. “I just started crying,” she said. “I didn’t really believe it.
“I feel it’s a massive achievement, I never thought I would be going to Miss England.”
Since winning the regional competition, the beauty therapist, who owns a salon on Skinner Street, said she has had many messages of support.
She said: “The girls at Botham said ‘Oh, imagine if Miss England worked opposite us’ and one of my clients came in and said ‘oh my God I can’t believe someone from Whitby won Miss Scarborough.”
To remind her that the entire town will be backing her, Laura will sport a dress made entirely of around 300 scallops, caught in Whitby, for the eco-round of the competition.
Laura explained: “My boyfriend Barney’s dad is a fisherman so he helped collect them, and we were sat cleaning them in the garage all day yesterday.
“I wanted to do as much as I could for Whitby. That’s why I wore a Whitby Gazette dress for Miss Scarborough, I didn’t want it to be random.
In the build up to the four-day Miss England event, which will be hosted in Torquay, Laura is set to do a charity sky dive and all the contestants will take part in a ‘boot camp’.
Laura will be sponsored at the Miss England competition by Cross Butts restaurant at the Stables, who she thanked, and added: “Thanks to all my clients, friends, family, and my boyfriend Barney Allgood, who have all been amazing.”
