Taking time out of his busy touring schedule, Derek takes his turn In The Hotseat to speak to reporter Jessica Nightingale about his hopes to investigate and bring his live show to Whitby and district and tells us how he started his career in football.
1 What are your first memories of Whitby?
I was a small boy and we used to come on an annual family holiday, my mum and gran used to take us, and I remember Whitby always had the nicest weather.
From the age of about six up until I was 11 it was an annual tradition to come every year until we started going on holidays abroad.
2 What makes Whitby special to you?
I have fond feelings of Whitby and the coast, I’ve worked in Scarborough, but have yet to work in Whitby. I’m still waiting and am hoping it will happen in the near future.
3 Life’s highlight?
Without a doubt would be when I met my wife Gwen, she has changed so many things, she has been the driving force behind me.
She is my friend and the person I fell madly in love with, she supported me when I was developing my mediumship.
She is an all round star to this day.
4 Biggest regret?
I can’t say I have any, I have been very fortunate, it would be dishonest to say I had any.
5 What did you have for breakfast this morning?
I had two boiled eggs, fresh from my chickens.
I have 15 chickens and three ducks, I love eggs, and they are free range.
6 What is your favourite eating place?
It would have to be an award winning restaurant in Southport called Master McGraths, it’s very reasonable as well.
7 What is your favourite pub?
My favourite pub would also be Master McGrath.
8 Where are the best fish and chips?
Without a doubt would be from Whitby.
9 What is your worst habit?
I still smoke, not as much as I used to do, I’ve got it down to about eight or 10 a day.
10 Where was your last holiday?
My last holiday was a little place we have in Spain in Costa Blanca, all my family, children and grandchildren go there for their holidays to relax and catch a bit of revitalising sun.
11 When was the last time you cried?
The last time I cried was a fortnight ago, when my cat Mindi who we have had for 24 years passed away, my wife and I are both great lovers of cats.
12 What would be your ideal day in Whitby?
It would be a sunny day, where we could spend a lot of time by the water, eating Whitby fish and chips, maybe staying into the evening and going to watch a live show.
I have never done any investigative work in Whitby or any shows in the town either but I would love to if possible in the future.
I will speak to my agents and see if we are able to get a theatre show in the town.
13 What was your first job?
I signed as a young boy to play football, I was good I played for my school, and town and Lancashire School Boys.
I was scouted by Bill Shankly for Liverpool Football Club at the age of 13.
I was signed as an apprentice for the club at 15 and was a full-time professional for the club at 17 on the reserve team.
This was the other side of my life before mediumship.
14 What is your favourite film?
My favourite film is the Da Vinci Code.
15 What is your favourite book?
My favourite book is by Dan Brown the Da Vinci Code.
16 If you won the lottery, what would you do with it?
If it was a very large sum of money I would donate it to my preferred charities which I work for at the moment – Children’s Hospice, Anthony Nolan Trust’s and to bone marrow charities.
I have donated money made from my live shows to charities.
17 Dracula or Captain Cook?
18 What is your signature dish?
It would be my plain and simple but most glorious fish mixed with spaghetti and tagliatelle dish.
19 Favourite drink?
I don’t have too many but I do like red wine, not with every meal but now and again it’s nice.
20 What would be your epitaph?
Tried my hardest, tried to help and tried to be happy.
