THIS week’s celebrity In The Hotseat is former professional footballer Andy Toman, arguably one of the best players to pull on a Whitby Town jersey.
Toman was a scorer for the Blues when they beat North Ferriby 3-0 in the final of the FA Vase at the Wembley in May 1997.
That Whitby side were one of the best in the club’s history, also landing the Northern League title the same season before winning promotion again 12 months later, from the UniBond League first division to the premier division.
Toman played at football league level for Hartlepool and Lincoln City and is now an FA coach.
Sports editor Duncan Atkins fires the 20 questions ...
1 What are your first memories of Whitby?
Memories of Whitby are all the joyful fans at Wembley and going round Whitby on the open top bus and seeing the fans of all ages with smiles on their faces.
2 What makes Whitby special to you?
Whitby has a special place with me, as over the years we (the team) had a special rapport with the fans. We gave our all and the fans backed us through thick and thin because they realised what we were doing and what we were trying to achieve. We all worked together with the committee and we all deserved the vast amount of success we achieved, by playing football the way football should be played and also talking/liaising with the fans.
3 What has been the highlight of your life so far?
Do you need to ask? Wembley and all the above, every game at Whitby was a highlight because they were so enjoyable.
4 What is your biggest regret?
Leaving Whitby was a regret as I feel I still had a couple of seasons left in me. But the biggest was not managing such a great club as I’m a better manager than I was a player and I’d liked to have given something back to the loyal fans of Whitby.

Thailand. This was an over 40s football tournament which lasted 10 days. It is a beautiful country.
11 When was the last time you cried?
The last time I cried was when I fell out with my partner. I am now divorced but it could be a lot worse as I still have football.
12 What would be your ideal day in Whitby?
Ideal Whitby day would be get back together with my partner, go to Sacky’s for fish and chips and a drink (all free of charge) then go and manage Whitby in the semi-final second leg of the FA Trophy and take them through to a Wembley final, then go out on the town and mix with the fans.
