The former leader of North Yorkshire County Council has been named in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List.
Cllr John Keith Weighell, who represents Bedale, is awarded an OBE in recognition of his services to local government.
Cllr Weighell was leader of the Conservative group and leader of the county council for almost 14 years.
He said: “It was one of the best jobs in local government.”
He stepped down in May this year as leader but remained as a councillor for the ward which he has served since 1993.
Cllr Weighell was replaced in the leader’s hot- seat by Cllr Carl Les.
