Surgery merger given the go-ahead

ONE of the GP surgeries in Sleights will close at the end of the month after re-organisation plans were approved by the local primary care trust.

Churchfield Surgery on Iburndale Lane in Sleights will merge with Sandsend Surgery on East Row in Sandsend.

It means that the surgery on Coach Road, Sleights which was a branch of Sandsend surgery will close on 31 March.

NHS North Yorkshire and York said they had considered the full proposal and earlier this week recommended going ahead with both the merger and closure of the branch surgery.

From 1 April the practice’s new name will be ‘Sleights and Sandsend Medical Practice’ but the surgeries will still be known as Churchfield and Sandsend.

Dr Rory Newman, partner at Churchfield Practice, said the merger meant more access to a wider range of services for all patients.

He added: “The closure of the Coach Road branch will help us to achieve this as we can centralise services at our main site, Churchfield surgery, which is only half a mile away.” Dr Ian Suckling, partner at Sandsend Practice, said: “The vast majority of the comments we’ve had back from patients about our plans have been positive. We are therefore confident that the merger will cause minimal disruption for them.

“From 1 April we will be able to offer patients more flexibility and choice over their GP and which surgery they want to attend.

“We hope that all our patients who use either the Churchfield or Sandsend surgeries will stay with us. However, we understand that some patients may wish to move to another practice and we will support those who want to move.”

Patients who want to remain with the practice don’t need to take any action as their registration and records will be automatically transferred.

Those wanting to swap surgeries should attend the one they want to move to and complete a registration form.
