New guide for mental health sufferers

A NEW information guide is now available in the Whitby area for people with mental health problems and those who care for them.

The free guide has been written by people with mental health problems for people who suffer the same illness. It is packed with useful information about a range of subjects.

A comprehensive list of useful organisations is also available.

The guide, first published in 2003, was updated by Scarborough Survivors and Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale Mind with funding from North Yorkshire County Council Adult and Community Services. Mat Watkinson, who helped bring the guide up to date, said: “I learnt a lot writing this guide, about how common mental illness is and how many people are working tirelessly to support those who have a mental health problem, from the very common anxiety and depression to the complex long term illnesses like schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder.

“I hope the guide offers some comfort, and encourages readers to seek help and hopefully get a start on the road to recovery, or at least to realise that they are not alone.”
