Gladiator star turns to Bay for healing

One of the stars of a cult TV show has chosen Runswick Bay as the destination for a new business venture.

Diane Youdale, better known as Jet from Gladiators, has fallen in love with the Whitby coastline and is now a regular visitor to the Whitby area, when she can fit it in between her hectic TV and work commitments.

Since leaving the show in 1996, after falling and injuring the nerves in her neck, she trained as a psychotherapist and worked with the NHS, the RAF and with corporate businesses splitting her time between London and Manchester.

She created a series of health and well-being packages and believes Runswick Bay is the perfect setting for people to come and feel rejuvenated.

A first health and well-being weekend is being held at the Cliffemount Hotel, which overlooks the bay and is where Diane is now a regular guest of the hotel run by Ian and Carol Rae.

Originally from Teesside and still having family there, Diane said: “I left Teesside when I was 16, but my family are from Teesside and it has been a wonderful last few years re-discovering North Yorkshire.

“I used to come to Whitby and Runswick Bay on holiday when I was little so this is a major anchor of happiness and memories. I was doing section by section of the Cleveland Way and stumbled upon this place.

“Ian and Carol were here and that was it. That was three or four years ago and they can’t keep me away.”

It was while she was staying over Christmas and peering out from her hotel room balcony when Diane thought it would be the perfect spot to deliver one of her packages.

They launch at the hotel on June 14, 15 and 16 and it is hoped that others can take place throughout the year.

They include early morning pilates sessions on the cliff tops, fitness sessions, philosophy lectures and seminars on the science of health and well-being, beach walks and the opportunity to explore what Whitby has to offer as well as Sunday lunch at the hotel.

She added: “They said there was a room going and I stayed three nights and it was during that time I was looking out of the balcony and I thought I could do a health and well-being weekend here.

“I have been so many times and even when it is just for one night I feel completely rejuvenated.”

Diane has a busy schedule and spends two weeks a month in London and a fortnight in Manchester working with psychotherapy clients for the business she set up after leaving Gladiators in 1996.

She also does radio and TV work and next month will start work as a psychoanalyst for the Channel 5 reality TV show ‘Big Brother’.

But she says she loves to be near the sea whenever she can.

She added; “It is so unique here. I have travelled the UK a lot with work and when I was married but there is something rarified about this beauty.

“It is panoramic, huge, on a cliff edge, 300feet above the sea, it is immense.

“In ancient times people would always go to the sea, rivers or lakes to heal. It is something to do with the air above the sea and that can be very restoratative and healing.”

The weekend includes two nights accommodation in a balcony room, Friday evening arrival drink and dinner, breakfast on both mornings and Sunday lunch.
