Hawsker WI ladies top Endeavour show
Whitby WI hosted the Endeavour group show for the first time recently, at Lythe Village Hall.
“We were a little daunted at first as none of us had organised a produce show before, nor made many of the craft items,” said Sue Clarke, President of Whitby WI.
“We had set to work, creating the show class schedule list including jams, chutneys, a set recipe marmalade cake, a cake with the main ingredient of a vegetable – beetroot, parsnips, carrots and courgettes involved here – not all in the same cake.”
Craft items included useful items made from recycled materials, a child balaclava –to be sent on to charity – a hand made tea cosy, and jewellery.
Flowers included a mini arrangement in a tea cup, seasonal and edible arrangements.
There were 208 entries from members of the six WIs.
Each WI – Hinderwell, Ruswarp, Staithes, Fylingdales, Hawsker and Whitby – had also each presented a table of items representing ‘The best of ourselves’ of handmade items showing different skills that were not being judged in the show.
“Our judges were Russ Hurst and his partner Kirsty from Rusty Shears coffee shopin Whitby,” said Sue.
“They spent their time thoroughly tasting every one of the 40 baked items and 43 jams and chutneys. A tough job but someone had to do it.”
Barbara Rutter, President of Ugthorpe WI and previously a florist, judged the floral arrangements and handicraft section.
“We learned much about the importance of neat stitching and finishing off, as well as how best to balance a display with flowers and foliage.”
Finally, Keiron Farrow, artist and photographer, judged the photographs of Yorkshire and pictures made in any medium section.
When all the judging was complete, the ladies served the judges and helpers with soup and sandwiches.
The winning group was Hawsker WI, which was presented with the annual trophy.
In second place came Hinderwell and in third place Whitby.
Sue added: “We resolved to get a Masterclass from some of the winning bakers from Hawsker to help us novices improve our competition baking skills for the next WI show due in 2018 – plenty of time for us to hone our skills.
“Many thanks to all those who participated, organised, judged and encouraged us.”
