The run will feature a costumed street parade of Krampusse, Saint Nicholas, the return of the drummers Die Krampus Krümpettes, and a special fire performance from Mr Fox – all led by Whitby’s very own legendary Black Dog, ‘The Barghest’.

The parade is a fundraiser for Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary with a street collection.

In the evening all ticket sales from the Krampus Ball will go to St Catherine’s Hospice and there will be a fundraising raffle for Whitby and Scarborough Dog Rescue.

For those who don’t yet know, Krampus is the companion of good St Nicholas and is allowed to be the one that punishes the naughty children who do not deserve presents on the eve of the Saints Feast Day (December 5).

This is a very popular event in Austria and other European countries. The tradition has been sensitively interpreted by the organisers for the UK with an aim of appealing especially to families.

For the younger audience it can be seen as Where The Wild Things and the Gruffalo – a chance to make links with our untamed side but safely.

A spokesman said: “Although Krampus is a tradition from the Alpine regions, we want to include festive folklore characters from across the world and local legend and history, as well as the Black Dog, Hobs, the white mare of White Mare Cliff, the Star Carr shaman and the creatures from the sea created from rubbish picked up on this year’s beach clean ups organised by Whitby Beach Sweep.

“Activities in the Market Place start from noon and there will be a children’s workshop at Hetty and Betty Ballroom to make masks and horns.

“The parade will start at 3.30pm, moving along Church Street with an extended route and pauses for performances coming to and end with a lantern lit finale in the market place. Following the finale in the Market Square with the annual crowning of the ‘Thing Of The North’ a torch will be passed onto the spectacular Mr Fox for a fire performance at Endeavour Wharf/Dock End at 6pm.
