A painting, believed to be one of the first to include Whitby swing bridge, goes up for auction next month with a £700 price tag. ‘Boats Moored At Whitby’ is by Lincolnshire artist Frank William Scarbrough. The painting is not dated but marine experts think given the type of steam trawlers in the picture it could be from 1910. So, if Scarbrough visited Whitby that year he could well have been one of the first artists to use Whitby Swing Bridge, which opened only a few months earlier. Veronique Score head of marine art at London auctioneers, Bonhams said: “His Whitby views are rare and can therefore do quite well at auction.”
The sale is on Wednesday October 7.
