Farm plan to carry on camping to diversify

A farm on the outskirts of town is looking to diversify its business by turning one of its fields into a campsite.

Broadings Farm Caravan Site on the Guisborough Road already has permission for 69 touring caravans and 70 tents on land on the south side of the farm.

But the owners have since submitted a planning application to Scarborough Borough Council seeking permission to site 45 more caravans .

Permission has also recently been granted for a shower and toilet block.

Documents submitted with the planning application say the farm will continue to be the main source of business and income at Broadings but the camping side provides a much needed boost to the finances.

They say: “The applicants operate their camping/caravan site as an adjunct to their farm which remains their main source of income.

“The increasing popularity of the touring caravan and tented site is the reason for this application which will improve the financial viability of he enterprise and increase the benefits to the local economy.”

A Defra survey has revealed that in the last 12 months all farms other than large scale intensive units operated at a loss and it is only subsidy or diversification schemes, such as this one, that allow famers to remain solvent,
