The length of stay in some of Whitby’s parking bays has been extended.
The two-hour parking bays within the Whitby controlled parking area are having their maximum stay time increased to three hours.
North Yorkshire County Council is introducing the change following a consultation last October and in response to traders who wanted the maximum stay time in the town’s parking bays to be extended as they believe it will encourage more people to come into Whitby to do their shopping.
Cllr Joe Plant said:“We listened carefully to what local traders have had to say and have decided upon this change in order to support their wishes. A priority for the council is to support local economies and in this case we are backing traders who believe parking restriction changes will encourage more shoppers into the town.”
A decision on whether restrictions should be seasonal is being deferred until the borough council has reached a decision on whether to introduce winter parking charges on some off-street car parks.
