WHITBY’S lifeboat crew were asked to deal with a rescue of a different kind when a deer was spotted swimming in the sea.
It had got as far as the bouys and was swimming back towards the beach at about lunchtime on Sunday when the inshore life boat reached it.
The crew then walked the animal along the beach towards Sandsend where it climbed back up the banking.
Several people on West Cliff had spotted the deer on the beach below the Pavilion and raised the alarm by ringing the coastguard.
A lifeboat spokesman said: “It had turned around and was making its way back to the beach when it saw the boat coming and that spurred it on.
“It was very tired but wasn’t going to let anybody grab hold of it so they walked with it back towards Sandsend.”
Deer have been spotted on the West Cliff before and it is thought the animal may have been spooked by people and dogs on the beach.
