UPDATE: Police appeal for taxi driver to help in search for missing Whitby man

Police are trying to trace a taxi driver who they think might be able to help in their search for a missing Whitby man.

The taxi, a black Volkswagen Passat estate, picked a man up on New Bridge in Whitby at around 5.30am on Saturday 28 December and headed along Helredale Road towards Scarborough.

Officers believe that the taxi, which had a Middlesbrough Football Club sticker in the rear window, was going to Scarborough or Middlesbrough.

They are now appealing for the driver of the taxi to come forward as he may have vital information which can help with their search for Ian Gibbon and they would also like to trace the man who got into the taxi so he can be eliminated from their enquiries.

Ian (43) has not been seen since around 10pm on Friday 27 December at his home address in Stainsacre. During extensive searches to trace him officers located his silver Vauxhall Zafira on Larpool Lane but Ian remains missing.

Police have re-issued their plea for members of the public to keep an eye out for Ian and get in touch with the police if they see anyone matching his description.

He is described as white, around 5ft 6in tall, with a medium build, short black hair, brown eyes and a pale complexion. It is believed Ian is wearing blue jeans, a dark green hooded top and brown Adidas trainers.

Anyone who has seen Ian since Friday night is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 – select option 1 – and pass information to the Force Control Room.
