Re-trial possible after jury fails to decide verdict

A Whitby man charged with being armed with a work knife when he confronted local teenagers may be facing a re-trial.

The jury, hearing a charge against Joe Edgar (46) of possessing a bladed or pointed weapon in public, failed to reach a verdict on Friday (September 6) following a three day trial.

The alleged incident, outside the Middle Earth Tavern on August 3, last year, is denied by Edgar of Boulby Bank.

The prosecution has seven days to decide whether a re-trial should take place. Judge Kate Buckingham, at York Crown Court, said if a retrial was not held, he could be bound over to keep the peace.
