Police stop driver after making non-essential trip to Filey from Lancashire to go metal detecting

North Yorkshire Police have stopped a driver who had made a non-essential journey to Filey from Lancashire.

Sergeant Paul Cording, of the North Yorkshire Roads Policing Group. tweeted a picture of a vehicle being stopped near Malton.

He said the driver was on his way back to Lancashire from Filey having been there metal detecting on the beach.

Sgt Cording said: "Not an essential journey under the current Covid19 guidelines so reported."

Sgt Cording was questioned by a twitter user as to why the driver had been reported, the last course of action in the police's 'Four E's' approach - Engage, Explain, Encourage and Enforce.

He replied: "We really do engage, explain and encourage where we can but a 200 plus mile round trip for a non essential journey is putting others lives at risk and goes against what the government are telling us to do. #StayAtHomeSaveLives"
