THE SEARCH for a Newholm man who faced 25 counts of sexual offences against children ended in tragedy on Saturday.
Nigel Laidlaw (52), of Richardsons Row in Newholm, was due to appear at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court on Friday but failed to attend.
A warrant was issued for his arrest, but the body of a man matching his description was discovered in woods near Yarm, Cleveland, the following day.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: “A 52-year-old man from Whitby was reported missing at 9.45pm on Friday 6 July 2012.
“Following a number of police enquiries the body of a man matching his description was located near Yarm, Cleveland shortly before 12pm on Saturday 7 July 2012.”
Officers say they are not treating the death as suspicious and they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
Mr Laidlaw was due in court to answer charges relating to offences that stretched between 1991 and 1997.
He was accused of 25 counts of gross indecency and indecent assault towards three children - two boys and a girl - which all occured at Richardsons Row in Newholm.
The inquest was due to be opened and adjourned this morning (10 July).
