POLICE were called to Ruswarp Viaduct last Tuesday night after reports of a man climbing over the retaining wall and threatened to jump off.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: “Officers attended Whitby Viaduct at around 11.30pm following reports that a 20-year-old man intended to harm himself having climbed over the retaining wall.
“After a short period of negotiation with police officers he returned to safety.
“He was arrested and taken to Scarborough police station for assessment and his own safety.”
Whitby’s inshore lifeboat was asked to provide safety boat cover.
