Break-in at council depot

POLICE are investigating a break-in at Whitby’s Highways depot in Cholmley Way.

Thieves are believed to have removed part of a fence to gain access to the site owned by North Yorkshire County Council.

They made off with light plant items after breaking into four trucks and a container belonging to council maintenance contractors Balfour Beatty.

At the time of going to press yesterday (24 January), officers were still investigating exactly what was stolen although they believe the haul included three Stihl saws.

Forensic officers were carrying out a search of the area yesterday (24 January). It is thought a vehicle was used during the burglary which happened overnight on Sunday.
