A couple celebrating their wedding anniversary had a right “royal” knees up to mark the occasion last Friday – at a town centre chippy.
Gill and Paul Upton’s wedding date matches the Queen and Prince Phillip’s and they tied the knot at The Little Chapel of Flowers in Las Vegas on November 20, 2003 – the same day the royal couple got married 68 years ago in 1947.
The Fusco family, who have run the Royal restaurant on Baxtergate for 47 years, pulled out all the stops to celebrate the double anniversary, baking a special Las Vegas-themed cake for Gill and Paul after a search to find a Whitby couple celebrating their anniversary on the same day.
The cake, hand-made by third-generation restaurant manager Maria Fusco, who made her own wedding cake earlier this year, was paired with a bottle of fizz and regal portions of Royal Fisheries’ award-winning fish and chips.
Qualified cake decorating teacher, Maria said: “I wanted to make something a bit special for Gill and Paul because they didn’t have a cake of their own on their wedding day.”
Restaurant customers were also treated to bubbly and a slice of cake.
Gill and Paul, who both work for Scarborough Borough Council, often stop by the takeaway for a lunchtime curry and chips, but this was the first time they’d marked their anniversary, also Gill’s 52nd birthday, on British shores. She said: “We usually go abroad for our anniversary, so to celebrate this one at one of my favourite fish and chip shops was a real treat.
“Celebrating our special day on the same day as the Queen is the icing on the cake.”
