Whitby’s Civic Society is embarking on an ambitious project to document all of the town’s war memorials and the stories behind them.
It is part of a nationwide initiative to create ukwarmemorials.org which will be a one-stop shop for information on all the UK’s war memorials.
In Whitby, the more well known ones are at Dock End and St Mary’s Church but there are actually many more dotted about town, not to mention the ones in the various surrounding villages.
Joyce Stangoe, from the Civic Society, is leading the research project.
She said: “We would like to involve local people, particularly children, in this project to identify all our Whitby and district war memorials, to ensure they can be protected and conserved, but also to find the stories behind the memorial, why they were erected in the first place, when did this happen, who created the memorial and are there any pictures available.”
All the war memorials identified to date are on www.whitbycivicsociety.org.uk.
Any other information can be passed to firstname.lastname@example.org
Later in the year an exhibition of information is being planned and a war memorial trail leaflet or booklet will also be published.
