Civic reception for Wembley-bound Blues

The players of Whitby Town Football Club were given a civic reception by the Mayor of Oxford, Alderman JNL Baker, before their memorable 2-1 win over Isthmian side Oxford City in the third round of the FA Amateur Cup in February 1965.

This was the first time in the long record of Oxford City that an English team had been given a civic welcome.

Whitby went on to reach the final of the competition at Wembley Stadium, where they were beaten by Hendon. More on the 50th anniversary of the Wembley visit, the first of two, will be appearing in the Whitby Gazette.
