Design a Christmas card for the Whitby Town Council Mayor – and you could win the opportunity to switch on the Town Christmas Lights at the Whitby Christmas Festival.

The town council is running the design a Christmas Card competition for children.

The winning design will be used for the Mayoral Christmas Card and festival publicity – and the winner has the honour of switching on the Town’s Christmas Lights with a local celebrity.

Last year, Airy Hill pupil Mabel Witney did the honours, accompanied by Whitby’s Yorkshire and England cricketer Adam Lyth.

The application form is available at Pannett Art Gallery or can be downloaded from the Whitby Town Council website.

Designs need to be submitted to town council by Monday October 16.

Completed designs should be handed in at Pannett Art Gallery, which is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 9.30am to 4.30pm.

The competition is open to all school-aged children with more than 50 entries already received. Great excitement is building around this year’s Christmas Festival, which takes place from November 17 to 19.

There will be a range of attractions and activities on display throughout the weekend including a spectacular community lantern procession, a music stage of local talent, a

firework display, Santa and his sleigh, stalls and other activities, including fairground rides, music and entertainment throughout the weekend.
