A WHITBY student has won an award at the UK’s longest-running stockmanship competition.
Lauren Nicholson of Hutton Mulgrave, a former Whitby Community College student, impressed judges so much when she took the dairy heifer section at Bishop Burton College’s 50th anniversary event that she was handed the overall stockperson of the year award too.
She said: “I’m really delighted as the beast was playing up a bit. To get the overall award was a bit of a shock, but it’s great.”
A dairy farmer’s daughter, Lauren was judged by experienced stockmen and women on personal presentation, presentation of the animal, knowledge of the animal and handling of the animal.
As a stockperson part of her role is to be in charge of diet, exercise and grooming as well as training.
The competition features beef, sheep, dairy heifer, dairy calf and equine classes, all of which were judged by high-profile industry specialists in front of friends, family, students, staff and VIP guests.
