CONTRACTS on the new Wetherspoon pub in Whitby have been exchanged but the deal still hasn;t been finalised.
According to a spokesman for the pub chain the purchase of the property is still going ahead and revised plans for the building still have to be submitted and agreed by Scarborough Borough Council (SBC).
Rumours have been circulating Whitby that JD Wetherspoon had pulled out of taking over the former New Angel pub on New Quay Road because of the amount of work that needed to be done to the building which has been empty and boarded up since the new year.
It had also been suggested that the pub giant was interested in taking on the Resolution.
However, the company denied both rumours.
The spokesperson added JD Wetherspoon had “absolutely not” pulled out of the plans for the future of the New Angel and there is still things “that need to be sorted”.
No timescales have been reached for when the deal might be done or the new pub be open but the spokesman added: “Wetherspoon is as keen as ever to open a pub on the site of the former New Angel in the town.”
In January the Gazette reported the chain’s plans to take over the New Angel with a £1 million investment but the prcess was being halted by land registry issues.
The New Angel had been owned by a company called Absolute Leisure which went into administration in May 2009 but thanks to an agreement was still allowed to operate its businesses in Whitby, Newcastle, Hull and Darlington.
