Taxi prices set to go up

TAXI fares in Whitby are set to go up for the first time in three years.

The Scarborough and District Taxi Association requested that they be allowed to put the price of a taxi journey up by 20 pence because the cost of living has gone up since the last fare increase in July 2008.

The increase will apply to the base fare, currently £3.20, which is charged before charges are added by mile or a period of waiting time.

If no objections to the proposed changes are received during the fourteen days statutory consultation period, the new charging structure will be operational from 1 May.

A one mile taxi journey will cost £4.40, three miles will set you back £6.40 and to travel five miles will cost £8.40.
