Concern is raised over chalets

CONCERNS have been raised that when 30 chalets are built in Whitby the older structures will be forgotten.

Plans have been announced for the 30 new huts, which would include 12 high spec chalets, at a cost of £30,000.

One owner, who would not give her name, said she had rented chalets for the past 14 years and added: “Our chalet has not been painted for seven or eight years. Yes we have the beauty and enjoyment of being on the beach but we have a shed with one wooden bench and a screw on table, and two less than sturdy deck-chairs.”

She said that when the chalets were taken out of storage they had to be washed down because of accumulated dirt and they even gave them a lick of paint to spruce them up.

She added: “ What about the current owners? Are we to get some new pristine chalets? The waiting list must be met and yes they are popular but all that seems to matter is the revenue which they bring in.

“What about the maintenance – the staff always say how much pressure they are under and yes they are subject to pressure at the beginning of the season and at the end but where is the pressure during the season.”

At the time of going to press no one fro Scarborough Council was available to comment.
