A 12-year-old boy has been rescued after falling from an improvised rope swing into a steep valley in Whitby.

Emergency services were called to the steep valley on the east side of Whitby last night (Friday June 29) at 9.15pm.

Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team were called to help rescue the boy working with Yorkshire Ambulance Service, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and North Yorkshire Police.

The boy was taken to hospital and is believed to have multiple injuries.

A spokesman for Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue team said: "Working with the Ambulance service, crews from Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and North Yorkshire Police the child was assessed, transferred to a stretcher and recovered to the top of the valley with a rope system.

"After further assessment on scene he was carried over a couple of fields to a waiting ambulance for transport to definitive medical care."
