Botton Creamery scoops top food and drink award

A North York Moors cheesemaker has received the food and drink award at this year's Dalesman Awards.

Botton Creamery, based within the Camphill Community, scooped the top prize at an awards ceremony held last weekend, at Utopia, Broughton Hall, near Skipton.

The cheesemaker was presented with its award by Yorkshire writer and broadcaster Ian McMillan, in front of an audience that included the Yorkshire Vet, Julian Norton, the Yorkshire Shepherdess, Amanda Owen, and triple Olympic gold medal winning rower, Andrew Triggs Hodge.

Other winners at the awards - judged by Sir Gary Verity, Alan Titchmarsh, Dr Linda Pollard, David Mitchell and Adrian Braddy - included Christine Talbot, presenter of ITV Calendar, who was named Yorkshirewoman of the Year; Syrian-born cheesemaker Razan Alsous, who runs a highly successful dairy business in West Yorkshire, and received the Entrepreneur of the Year Award; and Ian Dewhirst MBE, who picked up the WR Mitchell Lifetime Achievement award for his prolific work as a local historian and public speaker, having given an estimated 4,000 talks during his lifetime.

Debbie North was another winner, taking home the Dalesman’s Countryside Hero award, after campaigning tirelessly for access for disabled people in the Yorkshire Dales.

The 12-year-old Dalesman Awards aim to celebrate the people and businesses of Yorkshire, with a particular focus on the countryside.
