Body recovered from cliffs

A man committed suicide by jumping off cliffs near Whitby Abbey on Wednesday evening.

Both Whitby’s lifeboats were called out at around 5.15pm after receiving a report that a man was missing in the region of Abbey Plain.

They found the 41 year-old man from the Lincolnshire area on rocks at the bottom of the cliffs.

Crews stayed with the man and monitored him before he was airlifted by the RAF to Scarborough Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

North Yorkshire Police said: “It is believed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and police will prepare a report for the coroner.

“We are not yet in a position to release the identity of the deceased.
