Whitby Town were plunged back into the Evo-Stik Premier Division relegation zone after losing 3-1 at home to Rushall Olympic.
Saturday’s reverse was their third in succession, following away defeats at Grantham and Hyde United, and drops Chris Hardy’s men down two places to 21st position in the table with relegation rivals Marine and Stamford both winning on Saturday and leapfrogging the Blues in the process.
Town fell behind to a 25th-minute Josh McKenzie strike, but were level just eight minutes later when Matty Waters found the net.
A goal conceded almost straight from kick-off at the start of the second period saw Rushall re-take the lead through Alex Reid, and Richard Pell’s own goal soon afterwards ensured that the West Midlands side left the Turnbull Ground with all three points.
“At the half-way point I was quite confident and I thought we did well to get ourselves back into the game,” boss Hardy said.
“To then concede after 60 seconds of the re-start is hugely disappointing, especially given it was something we’d worked on at training on Thursday.
“Another soft goal took the stuffing out the boys, and although we came back into it in the last 20 minutes, conceding as early as we did [in the second half] proved a real shift of momentum.”
The Blues will be looking to bounce back when they host Ashton United on Tuesday evening, 7.45pm kick-off.
