Bikers invited to popular event

BIKERS from the Whitby are are being invited to attend a popular motorcycle safety day.

Held in partnership between North Yorkshire Police and DW Motorcycles in Roscoe Street, Scarborough, the annual event attracts hundreds of riders from across the region.

The day is designed to reduce the number of road accidents, injuries and fatalities which involve motorcyclists.

Free motorcycle checks by mechanics and eye tests will be offered, while specialist safety equipment will be on sale.

Bikers will have the chance to have a free assessment ride, carried out by the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

A bike which was involved in a serious accident will be on show, to bring home the dangers riders face.

Representatives of North Yorkshire County Council will be on hand to offer expert advice.

Information on cornering and how to avoid collisions will also be offered.

TC Richard Hammond said: “It’s all about spreading awareness of road safety.

“In 2010 we had a number of serious injuries and fatalities. We want to deter that for 2011.

“We do that through education and enforcement - this day will be all about education.”

Dave Whitaker, owner of DW Motorcycles, added: “We’ve lost too many people over the years on bikes. They’ve been customers and friends.”

The event will be held on Saturdday 12 March at DW Motorcycles from 10.30am to 4pm.
