A sponsored 24-hour pool marathon is being held over next weekend at the Rifle Club from 6pm on Friday April 8 and ending at 6pm on Saturday April 9.

There will also be a tombola and cake stall from 12pm on the Saturday to boost the funds which have already reached £800 from pledges so far.

Derek Parker from Whitby has organised the event after his mum died from cancer in February and other family members also were affected by the disease.

He told the Gazette: “I thought I needed to do something so I had a word with my brother and son to see if there was something we could do together.

“A mate’s mum died last year too so we are all in the same boat.”

Taking part in the marathon are Derek and son Robbie, Ste Humble, Martin Parker, Les Brown, Gareth Ludlam, Simon Page, James Inglis, Gary Davidson and Simon Farley.
